who we work with
Hey there, I’m Steve, author of "Open the Bleed Off" and Founder of Unspoken Wounds.
Let's address the elephant in the room: I might not be the right coach for you. And that's okay. I value your time and energy too much to waste it.
So, why shouldn't you hire me as your coach?
Frankly, I'm not a saint. Life? It’s been messy. I’ve faced brushes with the law, late-night brawls, and the harsh realities of warfare. Raised in a fractured home, I found solace in boxing, soldiering, and even fatherhood amid four tours that nearly claimed my life.
Credentials? None from fancy universities or esteemed coaching academies. Yet, beneath my raw journey lies a resonating truth that's touched hundreds of thousands of lives worldwide. And the reason major energy organisations worldwide hire me to speak to their teams.
Having spent 15 years in the Oil and Gas industry, I've witnessed firsthand the silent struggles and sacrifices of those who power our world. A phone call years ago shattered me – a colleague, a friend, lost to the silent burden of stress offshore. It ignited a mission to address mental health across major energy organizations worldwide.
I’ve been a beacon for those in the shadows of trauma, inspiring everyone from executives to veterans with my journey. Featured on TV, in magazines, and at elite institutions, I've helped transform countless lives—from stressed-out managers to the teams on the drill floor dealing with pressure every day. I’ve been fortunate to speak at major energy companies where they need the raw truth of mental health addressed in a genuine, practical way from someone who understands their world, your world!
But here’s the essence: I uncover wisdom in wounds. I don’t heal scars; I illuminate the lessons within, making me the coach you didn’t know you needed.
I know times are tough. I’m not here to waste your time but to guide you toward genuine growth and transformation for your team.
Let's embark on a wisdom-packed journey together.

and give your team the greatest advantage to living a much happier life
“In the past few years, I have stood by helplessly as four friends succumbed to the darkness of suicide. I've navigated the rough waters of divorce, seeing the toll it took on my son as he grappled with the upheaval. An accident nearly cost me my right hand, a career that once defined me evaporated, and the pandemic isolated me from the world, leaving me adrift for two long, isolating years. Loneliness, depression, and financial strain gradually eroded the edges of my mental fortress.
I recount these experiences not to evoke sympathy but to emphasise that life's struggles touch us all. You may carry a similar load or a unique blend of adversities. Regardless, there's one truth we all share: life's trials can accumulate, unseen and unheard, until they threaten to drown us.
Speaking about these struggles takes a lot of work. Society often celebrates stoicism, the art of keeping an unflinching facade. But the truth is, this illusion of strength comes at a cost. The real power lies in unveiling vulnerability, in recognising that asking for help is not a sign of weakness but a testament to our courage.
My journey through the labyrinth of life has revealed that speaking is healing. It doesn't obliterate the pain but breathes space into it, allowing the healing process to begin. We don't need elaborate rituals or grand gestures; the power lies in the simplicity of opening. I felt a shift within me when I started embracing the unspoken pain. I felt lighter inside like a door to clarity had opened to me. Sharing my struggles, even in fragments, felt like a profound release”.

Overcoming ego is a pivotal step toward progress. When we collectively move beyond our individual concerns, we propel ourselves further than we could alone.
speaking is healing
It's never easy trying to open up about your feelings, but the truth is we simply don't live in this world anymore. We are the leaders in speaking up and out about the way things can be, not how they are. We know there's a problem, we admit that, now we aim to fix it, the only question is, will you help us?
our industry
is under
pressure
Never before have we been under so much weight, we need to open up and release this pressure
We need people with compassion
For most of us, there are occasions at our jobs when we feel stressed, and we can manage it. A difficult day might be followed by relaxation at home, which helps in reducing stress. However, what happens when this relief doesn't come?
leaders with empathy
When the pressure remains constant, and the stress doesn't dissipate, a sense of depletion sets in. You start feeling disconnected and emotionally drained, even when you're away from work. The desire to mentally check out grows, but responsibilities and obligations hold you back. This is the point where seeking help becomes imperative.
if were going to make it
Both personal efforts and support from managers and superiors play a role in managing burnout. Creating a safe space to open up about your challenges and emotions isn't a sign of weakness; in fact, it's an act of tremendous courage. By doing so, not only do you give those around you insight into your situation, but their compassionate understanding also provides an opportunity for you and your colleagues to grow stronger, forge closer bonds, and become more effective as a team.
Burnout, often misconceived as a result of a single stressful event, is actually a slow accumulation of stress over an extended period. The duration of this build up directly impacts the intensity and duration of the burnout itself, as well as the time it takes for a full recovery.
I have known Steve for several years. He has been of great help to me and my trauma team in its work. He seems inexhaustible in his own efforts to help people. I am also impressed by how imaginative he is, and he works very hard to ensure his plans come to fruition. On several occasions, he and I have made presentations together to, for example, undergraduate students. He tells of his own experiences sensitively and movingly. In particular, he is helpfully frank about how they have affected him and his family. What he is currently doing, and seeks to do, represents an important contribution to the welfare of all who care to make a change.

“Steve recently shared his inspiring story with Kellas as part of an offsite team development day for our staff. He was brilliantly engaging and spoke openly and honestly about his journey from a challenging upbringing to his military career and subsequent mental health struggles. The focus of our team day was wellbeing in the workplace and Steve’s talk added a heartfelt and personal element to the agenda.”
- Kellas Midstream
Steve we have had really good feedback from the session especially from the workshops (which are generally a tough crowd) Thank You so much and thank you for your time today and for speaking from the heart, your enthusiasm for all things mental health is apparent and you are making an amazing difference to peoples lives.

"The moment I met Steve I was struck by the honesty with which he spoke about his experience, the rawness of his emotions and the power of his love for his family, and determination to do the right thing by them. He brilliantly articulates the trauma many service personnel go through, and gives them a voice as well as showing how a single moment of clarity turned his own life around, and the lives of those close to him. He embodies a strength of human spirit that many of us strive for but don't always manage achieve ourselves. It's been a privilege to get to know him and all his family."

Steve's experiences and story was an inspiring workshop in November 2009 with our 4th year occupational therapy students. Steves engaged the students and enabled them to appreciate the many challenges and health problems that war veterans can experience when they leave the military . We look forward to Steve being part of our students learning and development again in 2010
